How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  1. Explore better ways to flip vacant land/grayfields. I

I see se many open plots of land that could be developed and yet don't understand why they aren't. If it is because of environmental concerns, then perhaps the District should re-evaluate its development programs to support clean-up, instead of building housing directly. There is a lot of open developable land outside of downtown.

  2. Start a policy innovation lab.

We have such a concentration of professional policy experts - let's start exploring creative policy solutions and be on the cutting edge of policy innovation. Create a forum supportedby the District to cull those innovative ideas or help support small businesses/non-profits to try these out.

  4. MAKE METRO MORE USER FRIENDLY, including the buses

Because of the cost of housing, many people have to live 2 & 3 buses away. This gets very expensive. I pay $125/mo ! Not everyone gets job subsidy. We need to find another way to subsidize METRO besides raising the fare. People who are job hunting are rally having a hard time. And the SmartTrip card should be waaay simplified. I've lost a lot of $$ on that card, and so have se of my clients.

  5. Protect the Environmental Health of DC Youth & Residents

Health relates to learning, economics and quality of life. Children exposed to environmental pollutants such as lead and asthma related air pollutants will suffer from learning disabilities and missed days of school. Some environmental pollutants are being linked to behavioral and other issues. Healthy foods free of environmental contaminants play an important role in learning, health and well being. So an important component of improving learning for students should also consider protection of environmental health.

  7. Visitor Center in DC owned building

Establish a Visitors Center for tourists to DC on the first floor of the Wilson Building in partnership with DC Vote, Cultural Tourism DC, & the Historical Soceity of WDC. Currently the feds have no visitor center. The White House Visitor Center is closing soon. DC take the initiative to welcome visitors & give them a history lesson to this great city. Or open a visitor center in the new Trump Hotel in the Old Post Buidling. Job creation. Promote statehood.

require that any writtten statments filed by attorneys with all DC Courts/BAR Counsel/Atty/Client Arb Board, be subject to criminal fines/imprisionment, i.e., "under oath, subject to perjury!!" for false, misleading reps, libel, etc. same as DMV/DCRA do when applying for a DC Driver's License, or Hot Dog Vendor's license. May Help DC & those living in it become more HONEST! -- Even the Attorneys, Judges, Attorneys General!!--Better ROLE Models for kids, if not other adults

  12. The Mayor informs us we have a partnership with Brazil. Let us have our own Carnival in the fall using Brazilian/New Orleans ideas

Pick a weekend in the fall that is not too busy for a major Carnival/October Fest type of event. Bring inn lots of tourists. In Brazil they have "Samba Schools". Each neighborhood prepare an elaborate dance routine and fancy floats for a big competitions. We could do the same using our schools and parks in summer. Bring together youth, the retired elderly, and others who can spare some time. Prepare dance and parade routines, costumes, fancy floats, etc. Lots of fun work for all during those long, slow, hot summer months when kids get in trouble the most.

  13. Revamp or Eliminated --> KSA (ranking factors) when applying for JOBS in the District of Columbia

The Federal Government has eliminated the KSA process when applying for federal employment. I believe the District of Columbia should follow by recvamping or eliminating the whole process. The whole process takes up to much quality time and space to apply for something that is so time sensitive. The ONLY beneficiaries of said process are current and former employees (federal and district). Also, this process requires reading and expensive writing that proves long-term skills and experience. Individuals on the outside (DEU, US Citizen and the Public) are encourage to apply oftern passed over for current (federal/district) employees and special preference…

  16. Reduce fragmentation by Integrating Community Health organizations to the Health system

Community Organizations are a critical and integral part of the health system, yet not part of it. Referrals to organizations like such should help build capacity to serve people with no access through a very fragmented system. Clinics and hospitals should be able to refer patients directly to organizations that are the liaison to the community when the hospital or clinic can't give timely and appropriate care. Mental Health is one of those services that are critical for patients, not usually covered by insurance and dealt with by community organizations.

  17. The Proposed Real Property Assessment is a rip off, Because somebody brought, a house in your neighbordhoood that who makes more thanbody

The Real Property Assessment is unfair to people who have lived in DC all of their lives. Just because somebody bought or built a house in your neighborhood that cost over 300,000, dollars should not have an impact on your house, especially if you have no intention on selling your home. my property taxes have gone up so high, that I can't afford to stay in my house, but I guess that's the idea, forcing people out of their homes. Is that what you consider the American Dream?

  18. Stop making our city the highest taxed in US. Coupler D-40 tax Deductions & Exemptions with the Federal IRS104 figures.

Every year the US govt. raises the D & E figures for inflation. DC last raised this figure in 2008. From 1991 to 2005 there was no increase in DC
Exemptions and Deductions ($2,000 and $1,370) putting us way behind.
    * DC Exemption 2011, single and married $4,000, Deduction $1,650 each.
    * Federal Exemption 2011, married $11,600, single $$5,800, Ded. $3,700.
    * Unincorp. Franchise Tax, required for all with business gross of $12,000.
Unchanged since 1986. Inflation adjusted should be $25,000.
    * Basic Business License is a disaster. Many people are renting a room or
    two illegally not knowing the…
