How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  1. City subsidized programs to develop workers' skills

As a garment manufacturer looking to create new production to contribute to not only the US economy but the District's it would be nice to have the city develop programs that taught residents without higher education or highschool diploma the skill of garment making to give production factories a reason to set up shop in the city and create jobs quickly that are paying livable wages. Garment production includes everything from fashion, to uniforms, to undergarments. Something to think about

  2. The AIDS/HIV is a huge issue.

How about educating people that reside in Nursing Homes (as a great percentage of infected individuals are over the age of forty) and or Senior Housing. They may be infected and not know it. Also, have more PR surrounding the issue- specifically for DC (surrounding area) residents. Lastly, use people who are infected to teach others.

  3. DC Govt - Program Mgrs will not promote or hire DC residents even if qualified

The Mayor and Council of the District work hard to promote opportunities for the people of the District of Columbia, but their are people in postions of power and authority that will not hire or promote DC residents, even though, they have the skill set to be an actual contributor of their government. But, when DC Program Managers hire people outside of DC, because they want their friends in the position, then resident don't stand a chance.
All of us know that 70% is outside of the District and 30% is made up of the residents of the District.
    How…

  5. Create vibrant public park by tearing down the fence surrounding grounds for Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH)

2 years ago I moved into Park View in Ward 1. Its a wonderful community, but unfortunately the view of the park is blocked by huge fences protecting the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH). How magical would it be for the community to have a green space to enjoy? Surely there is a path to respect our veterans but still serve our community? Green space is at a premium, lets bring the quality of life up for the whole community. I imagine that the retirees may even enjoy the site and opportunity to interact with children, families and couples enjoying…

  6. Start building the purple Line

We need a metro line that circulates AROUND the city and connects with each radiant. It will dramatically change the traffic jam in and out of the city. Any city planner, even any working citizen can see that it's essential; Every "adult" city has a "beltway" and a METRO LINE that encircles the city. It's 1,000 times more useful than laying track for a trolley on H St. NE. Get some common sense and stop being picturesque.

  7. Ask banking and financial institutions to sponsor free classes on how to make a budget and live on it.

It would benefit people who don't know how to budget, and could be held at bank and credit union branches. Very good PR for the sponsors!

  8. The Teen Curfew Law.

My idea is to change the time of the "Curfew Law" for teens in the D.C and Maryland area. Letting kids stay out until 11:00 has caused more problems then before. I believe to you knock that time back about and hour or so then the chances of violence.

  11. Stop parking scams

The meters were extended until 10 o'clock because the District said it needs money. Ok, easy enough to pay from your phone or card. After 10 your fine. Wrong , the second you no longer have to pay, police/meter maids slap $50 dollar tickets on your car for no reason (other than scamming/sealing). For those of us who work, entertain, dine, visit etc. it's a disgusting and illegal act. (implemented by the previous mayor. This happens up and down K st., and many places downtown. Good luck getting their hand out of your pocket.

  13. Invest and grow of an innovation economy in DC. Focus on iBed job creation and competitiveness for the 21st cent. DC Innovates, Inc

DC needs to establish a 21st century economic development framework that will foster an innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem with the goals of expanding new job and business opportunities for the residents of the District of Columbia. The District has been the proverbial 'hole-in-the-donut' as compared to its suburban MD and Northern VA counterparts. So, even though the District is:

 home to several leading universities and is the geographical center of the Greater Washington DC Metropolitan Region
 located in proximity to perhaps the largest federal R&D centers including the NIH, Navy Medical, Fort Detrick/USAMRIID and others
     located in…

  14. From 3-6 pm weekdays reassign school guards or communi police to local libaries

I notice a lot of unruly teenagers (and middle school students) coming into Tenley and Georgetown the libraries when school lets out. I have heard that the local library is still the "babysitter" of choice of parents who don't monitor their children after school. It is not fair for the librarians to have to control them and perform their normal duties. Redirect a community police officer to libraries and other hangouts for the few hours after school lets out. The police officers should record student ids of students who cause problems and report the information back to the school principals…

For One City One hire police your HR dept. to follow the "residency" regulations in accordance to Chapters 3 and 38 of the DPM and stop hiring cronies, ala Fenty.

DC Residents Concerned about Job Growth and Spurring Economic Development

Are you concerned about job growth, economic development, and improving access to retail services throughout the District of Columbia?

Here are recommendations for DC residents to consider to encourage the Mayor’s Office and DC Council to support the creation of good-paying jobs and to improve economic development and neighborhood revitalization planning within the District.
A Comprehensive Workforce Development Strategy for the Entire City. There are neighborhoods in Wards 5, 7 and 8 with the highest unemployment levels in the city, such as Ivy City and Brentwood in Ward 5. A…

  18. Tasting DC

Chicago hosts it's annual "Taste of Chicago" on the lakefront in the summer...it is fantastic and enjoyed by many..I figure, DC can create an annual free (frfee to attend but you pay for what you want to eat) event on the Waterfront area...that areais up and ocming and this would surely bring revenue.

  19. Expand the Capital Bikeshare system with more stations to further reduce traffic congestion and parking shortages

Everyone complains about traffic congestion and lack of parking but real solutions to these problems are hard to come by. Increasing reliance on biking is a tried and true way to solve both problems.

The Capital Bikeshare program has been a huge success with a recent expansion bringing the total number of stations to over 140 stations, but membership and usage is still growing so fast there's often full and empty stations where and when they're needed most.

There are also many areas of the city without stations making the system unusable for those who live or work in those…
