An error occurred while saving the comment Ward 5 Resident commentedAccountabilty requires good information. Unfortunately, the District has not always done a good job of collecting data on how our city services are performing. This must change. Council and the Mayor can lead this cultural shift by investing in data infrastructure and demanding better data when making budgeting decisions each year. OCP should ensure that contracts are awarded based on performance, not politics.

An error occurred while saving the comment Ward 5 Resident commentedThe theme of this summit is ONE city. That means one city for all residents - rich, poor, black, white, native, or foreign born. Let's focus on working together to build a great city and stop the self-destructive culture of finger-pointing.

An error occurred while saving the comment Ward 5 Resident commentedCan you share more information about what New York is doing? As a parent with young children, I find weeknight ANC and Civic Association meetings frustratingly exclusive to young families and we love to see technology used to get more residents involved in local decisionmaking.

An error occurred while saving the comment Ward 5 Resident commentedI don't disagree that some of the fired DCPS students may deserve a second chance. But I do take issue with Ms. Miller-Hill's us-vs-them take on the issue. The title of this forum is the ONE City Summit. Let's stop pointing fingers and work together to make DC great.

An error occurred while saving the comment Ward 5 Resident commentedSome good points here. But one note: Walmart isn't taking any economic development incentives ($) from the District, so the city has no leverage to guarantee hires, etc.

An error occurred while saving the comment Ward 5 Resident commentedI agree that our high schools - public, private, and charter - should be providing more career and technical education options for DC youth. Neverthess, "work ready" is the same thing as "college ready!" All of our young people need to graduate from high school with a solid academic foundation if they are going to succeed in the workplace - regardless of whether they choose to attend college or not.

An error occurred while saving the comment Ward 5 Resident commentedGarment manufacturing is one of the lowest paying industries in the world. That's precisely why the US garment manufacturing industry cannot compete with Asia. Can't we aspire to better employment opportunities for District workers?
I wonder if another strategy might be to find ways to engage kids at the libraries after school so they're benefitting from their time at the library rather than causing a disturbance. After school activities like book clubs, educational games on computers, Odessey of the Mind, and tutoring would help to address the issue you describe and provide broader benefits for these young people.
