How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  1. AI02 To become One City we must first become One Comm-Unity, by forming collective collaborative network of activities and engagements

By developing first the human capacity of DPR after school and program management administering in collaboration with DCPS to start. Without forward movement beginning here at these two agencies first ... every effort and all agendas and mission assignment will be wasted effort and resources again. I share this lesson from experience as an volunteer/ Bus., Owner of WDC, there is no other way. Peace, AI02 "To Become One City we must first Become One Comm-Unity"

  2. The Teen Curfew Law.

My idea is to change the time of the "Curfew Law" for teens in the D.C and Maryland area. Letting kids stay out until 11:00 has caused more problems then before. I believe to you knock that time back about and hour or so then the chances of violence.

  3. Control the Deer Population in Rock Creek Park with a bow hunting season for residents.

The population of whitetail deer in Rock Creek Park is out of control. We need to open up a bow hunting season to reduce the population to a sustainable size. This program will reduce car-deer accidents, provide food for homeless shelters and re-connect district residents to nature. This project will also provide revenue from hunting licenses that can be directed toward environmental programs in the district.

  4. Give Businesses a tax break if they Buy DC services and goods or partner with area schools

If a business can send proof with its tax returns that it purchased 50% or more of its services and goods from DC small businesses or partners with a school to provide needed goods and services (for example, if a yoga studio offers free classes to students in DC public schools), they should get tax relief.

  7. Allow "Tasers" for Self Defense, so We won't have to buy Guns to defend ourselves

Allow "Tasers" to be sold in DC (All 50 States allow), so we won't have to buy Guns to Defend ourselves from Crime and to feel safe. Why is DC registering Guns, but not allowing Non-Lethal Self Defense like Tasers? I and many DC residents have to buy a Gun to protect ourselves if you don't change the law.

  8. Rewrite your script to include the other half of the city - 52% of the nation's W-O-M-E-N!

You are committed to education for children, construction jobs for men. What about women? You can educate kids all you want and hire all the men you want and DC will still lag behind because the status of women in any country determines the quality of life and welfare for all.

  15. Create proper DC Laws that will be compatible to HOA Bylaws

CREATE PROPER DC LAWS THAT WILL BE COMPATIBLE TO HOA BYLAWS
Change and/or added addendum is needed in the DC laws as it relates to HOA’s (Homeowners Associations)
The District of Columbia is signing off on legal binding documents for HOA’s when in fact the HOA’s bylaws are in conflict of the laws of the District of Columbia.

Many agencies in the District government are not abreast on how to handle complaints from HOA’s because of the ambiguity of the District laws as it pertains to HOA’s Bylaws. This leaves the HOA’s in turmoil and near bankruptcy because no one…

  17. Physical Installation Visualizing all the Social Data created in DC in real time

It want to see a "monument" if you will that is devoted to displaying all the social data created within DC in real time. This physical visualization could also have a web version but ultimately DC's artists and technologist would come together to create this fantastic display that could be moved to different parts of DC depending on the time of year and what events are taking place in that neighborhood.

  18. Ideas to spur Indigenous Small Businesses...

DC is a metropolitan City, yet the diversity it brings should be helping to nurture some international business profiles whether in the supply side or in the demand side... Such feature needs to be considered when envisaging support to Small businesses... The best approach to Small business then would be a network approach instead of a single lane kind of approach...
