How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  3. Care for the sick and disabled citizens of the District by making medical marijuana available ASAP, and ensure the DoH is transparent

The sick and disabled residents of the District who live with debilitating pain on an everyday basis should not have to wait another day to have safe and reliable access to the medicine that the citizens of the District voted in favor of by a 69% majority. The Medical Marijuana Program, as it is operated by the department of health, has been too slow, not transparent, and not responsive to patients or citizens needs. Stop the foot-dragging and get the program underway for the sake of the sick and disabled among us.

  5. More money for Metro and bike lanes

expand and support public transportation, as essential infrastructure for healthy people to promote more exercise and give access to amenities & jobs, as well as conserve resources, reduce traffic load/impacts, improve air quality, allow public funds to be spent on more critical elements rather than dealing with streets because of too many cars

  6. The Mayor informs us we have a partnership with Brazil. Let us have our own Carnival in the fall using Brazilian/New Orleans ideas

Pick a weekend in the fall that is not too busy for a major Carnival/October Fest type of event. Bring inn lots of tourists. In Brazil they have "Samba Schools". Each neighborhood prepare an elaborate dance routine and fancy floats for a big competitions. We could do the same using our schools and parks in summer. Bring together youth, the retired elderly, and others who can spare some time. Prepare dance and parade routines, costumes, fancy floats, etc. Lots of fun work for all during those long, slow, hot summer months when kids get in trouble the most.

  7. Bridging the divide among tenants, small housing providers, DHCD, other Government agencies and stakeholders…

Bridging the divide to fulfill the vision of One City among tenants, small housing providers, DHCD, other Government agencies and stakeholders, by facilitating problem solving conversations and meetings that will result in creative solutions and accomplishments for One City.

The first step could be for DC Department of Housing and Community Development establish an email list for all people interested in moving this idea forward.
A second step could be to come to the Meetup For One City, held on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 12-2:30 at the Burma restaurant, @ 740 6th street NW second floor, DC…

  8. EIGHT GREEN ISSUES

EIGHT GREEN ISSUES REQUIRING ONE-CITY ACTION
Submitted for Discussion at Mayor Gray’s February 11, 2012 One-City Summit
    by Gene Solon (gsolon@verizon.net)

    1. Do smarter, more coordinated development and transportation planning! Strengthen and enforce engine idling regulations for buses, boats and other vehicles -- and do everything else necessary to dramatically increase the number of “code green” Air Quality Index days in our nation’s capital! Our health is at stake!

    2. Upgrade D.C.’s current vehicle fuel consumption and emissions regulations so that they match or exceed all California state regulations, including its state government fleet requirements – and including its recently…

  10. Create vibrant public park by tearing down the fence surrounding grounds for Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH)

2 years ago I moved into Park View in Ward 1. Its a wonderful community, but unfortunately the view of the park is blocked by huge fences protecting the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH). How magical would it be for the community to have a green space to enjoy? Surely there is a path to respect our veterans but still serve our community? Green space is at a premium, lets bring the quality of life up for the whole community. I imagine that the retirees may even enjoy the site and opportunity to interact with children, families and couples enjoying…

  11. Visitor Center in DC owned building

Establish a Visitors Center for tourists to DC on the first floor of the Wilson Building in partnership with DC Vote, Cultural Tourism DC, & the Historical Soceity of WDC. Currently the feds have no visitor center. The White House Visitor Center is closing soon. DC take the initiative to welcome visitors & give them a history lesson to this great city. Or open a visitor center in the new Trump Hotel in the Old Post Buidling. Job creation. Promote statehood.

  12. Replace Open Sky Parking Lots for Public Parks

Some areas of the city (such as Mt Vernon Triangle new residential area) are awfully plagued with low-occupancy parking lots.

This wasted city space could be transformed into beautiful city parks with a minimal investment, and make the District a more livable city.

  13. MAKE METRO MORE USER FRIENDLY, including the buses

Because of the cost of housing, many people have to live 2 & 3 buses away. This gets very expensive. I pay $125/mo ! Not everyone gets job subsidy. We need to find another way to subsidize METRO besides raising the fare. People who are job hunting are rally having a hard time. And the SmartTrip card should be waaay simplified. I've lost a lot of $$ on that card, and so have se of my clients.

  15. Improve public participation processes and outreach across the city through an integrated approach.

Instead of multiple outreach/public involvement processes (One City v. sustainable DC), start to create an enhanced public outreach and involvement process and forum that can cross different agencies and projects across the City. I don't have enough time to participate in this, my ANC, the previous outreach with the zoning update, specific public projects in my neighborhood and other visioning/public participation processes. Streamline it so they are combined/mutually supportive. See CrowdBrite for one integrated platform that could be used for this as part of an enhanced 511/public outreach/communication program.

  16. Promote and Facilitate Collaboration in Communities

Rather than placing the burden on the government to solve everyone's problems, invest resources into facilitating community gatherings where residents can collaborate and work together to leverage diverse individual strengths for community gains--especially with regard to breaking down social barriers and building neighborhoods that work together.

  17. More police at Metro station to prevent violence and theft

At certain Metro stations and bus stops there are a lot of jumpings and theft of shoes, money, or bags. If there were more police or security at these stations there would be a lot less violence and theft.

  18. There should be more ways for youth to give ideas and feeling about the community and city (Youth Citizen Summits)

Youth Town Hall meetings are okay, but i think that there should be more summits where youth can meet different councilmen and chairmen of different departments such as the Department of Education or the Department of Transportation and in front of other citizens in D.C.

  19. An ongoing campaign to clean up our city.

A clean up campaign involving schools, residents, workers and commuters. Residents could pledge to clean up their neighborhood on a given day. Schools could have a beautify our city day with contests for best slogans, clean-up plans or campaigns. City Workers and commuters could pledge to contribute by throwing waste in a trash can or volunteering. It could be an on-going yearly event.
