How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  1. The Proposed Real Property Assessment is a rip off, Because somebody brought, a house in your neighbordhoood that who makes more thanbody

The Real Property Assessment is unfair to people who have lived in DC all of their lives. Just because somebody bought or built a house in your neighborhood that cost over 300,000, dollars should not have an impact on your house, especially if you have no intention on selling your home. my property taxes have gone up so high, that I can't afford to stay in my house, but I guess that's the idea, forcing people out of their homes. Is that what you consider the American Dream?

  2. Visitor Center in DC owned building

Establish a Visitors Center for tourists to DC on the first floor of the Wilson Building in partnership with DC Vote, Cultural Tourism DC, & the Historical Soceity of WDC. Currently the feds have no visitor center. The White House Visitor Center is closing soon. DC take the initiative to welcome visitors & give them a history lesson to this great city. Or open a visitor center in the new Trump Hotel in the Old Post Buidling. Job creation. Promote statehood.

  4. Protect the Environmental Health of DC Youth & Residents

Health relates to learning, economics and quality of life. Children exposed to environmental pollutants such as lead and asthma related air pollutants will suffer from learning disabilities and missed days of school. Some environmental pollutants are being linked to behavioral and other issues. Healthy foods free of environmental contaminants play an important role in learning, health and well being. So an important component of improving learning for students should also consider protection of environmental health.

  5. Replace Open Sky Parking Lots for Public Parks

Some areas of the city (such as Mt Vernon Triangle new residential area) are awfully plagued with low-occupancy parking lots.

This wasted city space could be transformed into beautiful city parks with a minimal investment, and make the District a more livable city.

  6. MAKE METRO MORE USER FRIENDLY, including the buses

Because of the cost of housing, many people have to live 2 & 3 buses away. This gets very expensive. I pay $125/mo ! Not everyone gets job subsidy. We need to find another way to subsidize METRO besides raising the fare. People who are job hunting are rally having a hard time. And the SmartTrip card should be waaay simplified. I've lost a lot of $$ on that card, and so have se of my clients.

  8. Start a policy innovation lab.

We have such a concentration of professional policy experts - let's start exploring creative policy solutions and be on the cutting edge of policy innovation. Create a forum supportedby the District to cull those innovative ideas or help support small businesses/non-profits to try these out.

  9. Explore better ways to flip vacant land/grayfields. I

I see se many open plots of land that could be developed and yet don't understand why they aren't. If it is because of environmental concerns, then perhaps the District should re-evaluate its development programs to support clean-up, instead of building housing directly. There is a lot of open developable land outside of downtown.

  10. Improve public participation processes and outreach across the city through an integrated approach.

Instead of multiple outreach/public involvement processes (One City v. sustainable DC), start to create an enhanced public outreach and involvement process and forum that can cross different agencies and projects across the City. I don't have enough time to participate in this, my ANC, the previous outreach with the zoning update, specific public projects in my neighborhood and other visioning/public participation processes. Streamline it so they are combined/mutually supportive. See CrowdBrite for one integrated platform that could be used for this as part of an enhanced 511/public outreach/communication program.

  13. Promote and Facilitate Collaboration in Communities

Rather than placing the burden on the government to solve everyone's problems, invest resources into facilitating community gatherings where residents can collaborate and work together to leverage diverse individual strengths for community gains--especially with regard to breaking down social barriers and building neighborhoods that work together.

  15. Donna Alston ran for the Mayor in the District of Columbia. She is strong. Clergy have conspired against her while secretly intruding on her

Donna Alston ran for the Mayor against Gray. Clergy and her enemies have conspired with the authorties to hurt her in the community. She needs a job to fight for being bullied in her home. She knows the Lord. Fight that Donna Alston fight for the city. She will stand for equality for all.

  16. More police at Metro station to prevent violence and theft

At certain Metro stations and bus stops there are a lot of jumpings and theft of shoes, money, or bags. If there were more police or security at these stations there would be a lot less violence and theft.

  17. There should be more ways for youth to give ideas and feeling about the community and city (Youth Citizen Summits)

Youth Town Hall meetings are okay, but i think that there should be more summits where youth can meet different councilmen and chairmen of different departments such as the Department of Education or the Department of Transportation and in front of other citizens in D.C.

  18. Invest in Metro and lobby Congress to reinstate the full transit subsidy for Federal employees.

Congress just cut the public transit subsidy for Federal employees in half, which means up to $1,200 a year in lost benefits, while wages are frozen. This will force many DC residents into their cars, making DC's terrible traffic even worse. In addition, that's $1,200 that can't be spent at local businesses and invested in the community. Metro connects the city and the region, and is key to making DC "one city." Let's keep it strong.

  19. An ongoing campaign to clean up our city.

A clean up campaign involving schools, residents, workers and commuters. Residents could pledge to clean up their neighborhood on a given day. Schools could have a beautify our city day with contests for best slogans, clean-up plans or campaigns. City Workers and commuters could pledge to contribute by throwing waste in a trash can or volunteering. It could be an on-going yearly event.

  20. Lack of Affordable Housing

How about more housing/apartments "based on your income" instead of a never-ending supply of luxury condos?? I'm rapidly getting priced out of my Logan Circle neighborhood--and I pay about $200 below the current market value because I've lived her for so long.
