How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  1. Open a psychiatric facility for those who are mentally ill and homeless

Since the closure of St. Elizabeths Hospital in Greater S.E., the mentally ill and unstable have been tossed to the streets. This is becoming an increasing larger problem in that they are mingled with those who are not mentally ill, they have no central location to obtain medications and/or live. A new facility needs to be created for those who fall under this category.

  2. Create an accessible and navigable database for youth programs

Create an accessible and navigable database for youth serving programs in the city that allows youth, parents, direct service providers, and organizations to access to existing age appropriate programs, asses resource distribution and better understand where youth are interacting with the city in out of school spaces. Use this as a platform to connect providers and build toward a more collaborative approach to service provision that shares information, reinforces common positive youth development themes, and supports youth and families through all of their daily, weekly, and yearly transitions. Eventually develop several user interfaces that interact with each stakeholder group, encouraging…

  3. Establish an independent DC Ombudsman's Office

The District Government often doesn't know when or how its clients, patients, and citizens are ill-treated, so the problem doesn't get fixed. As a result, a lot of unnecessary suffering occurs. DC Government needs an independent office that provides quality control on a timely basis, and a formal mechanism that offers solutions.

  5. There should be more ways for youth to give ideas and feeling about the community and city (Youth Citizen Summits)

Youth Town Hall meetings are okay, but i think that there should be more summits where youth can meet different councilmen and chairmen of different departments such as the Department of Education or the Department of Transportation and in front of other citizens in D.C.

  9. Return to the policies that mayor Fenty use in regards to senior citizen properties.

For one thing instead of seniors having to come to government offices, personnel, would come to senior facilities.

  10. Physical Installation Visualizing all the Social Data created in DC in real time

It want to see a "monument" if you will that is devoted to displaying all the social data created within DC in real time. This physical visualization could also have a web version but ultimately DC's artists and technologist would come together to create this fantastic display that could be moved to different parts of DC depending on the time of year and what events are taking place in that neighborhood.

  11. Give "No Soliciting" on the door the deterrent power of "Do Not Call" city-wide

My aging mom lost $12,000 to a "landscaper" who came to her door and convinced her that she needed to fix a few concrete cracks on her front walk. Aging residents citywide are at risk. Pass a law that imposes a severe financial penalty for opportunists who violate a posted "No Soliciting" sign, just as the "Do Not Call" registry protects citizens from unwanted telephone solicitations.

  12. Allow "Tasers" for Self Defense, so We won't have to buy Guns to defend ourselves

Allow "Tasers" to be sold in DC (All 50 States allow), so we won't have to buy Guns to Defend ourselves from Crime and to feel safe. Why is DC registering Guns, but not allowing Non-Lethal Self Defense like Tasers? I and many DC residents have to buy a Gun to protect ourselves if you don't change the law.

  13. Embark upon a city-wide, citizen inclusive campaign to develop a universal, marketable identity for the city of Washington.

Using input from every walk of life in Washington DC, we need to agree upon and articulate an internationally recognizable identity for the city of Washington. We need to have something OTHER THAN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT that all citizens of the City of DC can galvanize behind and be proud of. To accomplish this, I envision a campaign in four multi-year phases; Phase 1: Discovery Phase (Via a series of focus groups and other inclusive means, Identify a brand-able identity, and then use multi-media to socialize regionally); Phase 2: Market the brand domestically (Use multi-media to market the brand nationally…

  14. Create a publically searchable inventory of free stuff in DC

Keep stuff from going to the trash and recycling bins by making items available in DC for people who reside or have businesses in DC. Business and other organizations could include their liquidation inventory; govt would include surplus goods; other organizations could add to this. DC residents could electronically claim the items and schedule pick up electronically. If pickup is not made by scheduled time, items go back to the public inventory. A separate inventory that is only viewable to area food banks and nonprofit service providers could be made for surplus or expired food. (Area grocers still throw away…

  15. Enhance DC.GOV to search for all available services to residents of the District of Columbia from the public, private and non-profit sectors

Many of the ideas listed thus far already exist in DC, but many folks are unaware. An enhancement to DC.GOV which would include a fully integrated and seachable database of services available to residents would increase resident's knowledge of the resources as well as increase the ulitization.

  17. Invest in Metro and lobby Congress to reinstate the full transit subsidy for Federal employees.

Congress just cut the public transit subsidy for Federal employees in half, which means up to $1,200 a year in lost benefits, while wages are frozen. This will force many DC residents into their cars, making DC's terrible traffic even worse. In addition, that's $1,200 that can't be spent at local businesses and invested in the community. Metro connects the city and the region, and is key to making DC "one city." Let's keep it strong.

  18. Donna Alston ran for the Mayor in the District of Columbia. She is strong. Clergy have conspired against her while secretly intruding on her

Donna Alston ran for the Mayor against Gray. Clergy and her enemies have conspired with the authorties to hurt her in the community. She needs a job to fight for being bullied in her home. She knows the Lord. Fight that Donna Alston fight for the city. She will stand for equality for all.

  19. Promote and Facilitate Collaboration in Communities

Rather than placing the burden on the government to solve everyone's problems, invest resources into facilitating community gatherings where residents can collaborate and work together to leverage diverse individual strengths for community gains--especially with regard to breaking down social barriers and building neighborhoods that work together.

  20. Replace Open Sky Parking Lots for Public Parks

Some areas of the city (such as Mt Vernon Triangle new residential area) are awfully plagued with low-occupancy parking lots.

This wasted city space could be transformed into beautiful city parks with a minimal investment, and make the District a more livable city.
