DC.GOV has some of the worst websites I have ever used. You try to get a phone number or address to an agency, and you get minutes to a meeting or some legal document instead. DC government needs to redesign their webs to be more userly. At least make the first page that pops up state the obvious: address, hours of operation, phone number !?!!

Isn't that what 35 K St does, as well as a number of contract agencies? I'd like see St. E's expanded as an Assisted Care Living Facility for the mentally ill, like they do for folks who need medical care but not nursing homes. And yes, this living arrangement should allow a person as much freedom as the rest of us have.

DC has this resource via: all DC h.s graduates qualify for free college education. All D.C residents can get free training via Dept of Employment Services.

Yes, there needs to be an easier way find these resources.

Actually, half of the work is already done; they just need to be put together; i.e:
    ifcmw.org/Emergency Food & Shelter Directory; dchousingsearch.org; dcfoodfinders.org; or call the city's 211 or 311 number and ask.

Back in the day, your H.S diploma also gave you a marketable skill if you took "trade" classes. In Europe, at 16yo to graduation, half the day is academic and the other half is apprenticeship which not only teaches you from a pro, but also gives you working experience and a letter of recommendation. We need to utilize this idea. THEN, if you want to go to college, you can work your way through with a marketable skill. Also, this would cut down on crime.

One way to make foreigners feel welcome is to offer FREE classes to English-speaking people. I have been looking for a free Spanish to English class for 4 years and haven't found it, yet there are all kinds of free English to Spanish classes. Also, the public signs on the Metro buses and kiosks and bus stops should ALWAYS be in English AND Spanish. I resent living in the USA and not understanding a pubic sign because it's only in one language and not even the mother language of this country. Even the signs in Chinatown are in Chinese AND English !

I agree. Some cities allow that for every year of experience, that can equate to a year of college. If DC does this, they need to let folks know. Also, my clients without GED but have experience should be allowed to work... at least as a laborer. And one other thing, why aren't more DC residens hired? especially the ones with families that go back two and three generations? I see alll the Latinos hired an hardly any Black folks. Why? And, no, this is NOT a racist statement. It needs to be discussed and resolved.
