Create ways for Non-profits to share space and resources
Hello, my name is Louis H. Henderson. I am interested in presenting ideas and ways for non-profit organzations, through Communicating needs and opportunities with one another can help make more efficient use of our buildings and office space. This will ultimately help them build the capacity necessary to serve " One City".

Some time ago I learned that my doctors office was his office on Mondays and Thursdays. On other days other doctors used the space. the same could be done for nonprofits.

I agree. Too often non-profits and community organizations have to pay to use space (even in churces!). Yes, the library is free however noalways available. Use empty & non-empty buildings owned by the government for community use.

Steven, I agree that when we support one another we do have amazing results. I believe that the One City Vision is meant to be a Shared Vision. Keep up the great work! A Quote for inspiration.
We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

Hello, my name is Steven Satterwhite. I am very concerned with the limited opportunities non-profits are challenged with such as housing opportunities for persons living with HIV/AIDS. We have to become more awre of how vital this is to persons infected and affected with HIV/AIDS. DCHA and other Government agencies have limited these resources for example supportive housing wait list is overwhelming and becomes an obstacle when someone is faced with the effects of becoming ill. There seems to be a limited concern when in fact this disease continues to plague our communities. I have taken a special interest as a Community support advocate daily to provide resources for persons in need of services. However this cannot be done alone ,yes DOH has been a great support while still limited in there efforts. I propose to you utilizing these Gobernment buildings ,make them work for this great district. Lets be accountable in our efforts to enhance the lives of people who inspite of challenges want to succeed.Iam open to any creative ways for improvement. Ispeak soley from experience and a person living with this disease.I want to encourage you in knowing that when we support each other you have amazing results. I can go on and on based on my personal challenges right now with DCHA and it's little concern for citizens 0f the district to prosper. This I am requesting some one to look into you,ll be suprised with the lack of communication that goes into this process and leaves us who are in desperate need limitless.

Does anyone know what's going on with the Franklin School space downtown? It is huge and in a prime location to be shared and utilized by non-profits. Dunno if this is reasonable, just an idea... I'm brainstorming.
Can anyone with a greater knowledge of downtown planning update us on current Franklin School status or suggest other possible sites?

Non Profits can build their capacity by creating a data base of their current personel, volunteers, skills and and partner in projects that aim same mission, goals.
You will be amazed on the the value of the end results.
Often there are 10 organizations doing the same things but they have no ways to connect...Flore Lindor-Latortue, Ph.D

A Special thanks to everyone who has voted for and commented on this idea. Creating a shared vision will allow us to meet the unmet needs of our City. Our Mayor wants our ideas for making the District of Columbia truly " One City", and I greatly appreciate his leadership and vision. We know that Non-profits face many challenges in their efforts to build capacity, as they possess limited resources in comparison to the need of the service they provide. Effective cost & resource-sharing can lesson the challenge for some and with the present day economic situation, an incubator style space sharing for non-profits is the most cost-effective and most efficient solution to a growing problem in the District of Columbia which relies heavily on the services of non-profit organizations in our community. I look forward to our continued dialogue on this idea.

Anytime we can create ways to effectively use available resources on behalf of the residents of our communities it becomes a win/win for everyone.

In Eustis Florida our Chamber is considering a new larger location where they would offer incubator space to startup businesses and nonprofits for 1-2 years at a minimal cost. Doing this can help to keep costs down and still give nonprofits/businesses a presence in the community as they're building their client base.

Spectacular Louis...the truth of the matter is that the "common good" has rarely been advanced without a mutual collaboration between corporations, government and nonprofits. Your commitment to share resources between groups that can transform people will be a big win.

Maryland Counties have several buildings devoted to Non-profit space sharing. Finding Government or private business that would be willing to offer unused space for 2 or more nonprofits to share would be of value. It would also be a good idea to have a fully functioning "office"- all equipment and at least 2 staff that could be shared. I don 't need a secretary every day but one day a week would be great.

Here's a link I happened across that is building space-sharing office buildings for nonprofits all over. Looks like it's working and might be worth a phone call. It's a benefit to all the nonprofits in cost-sharing and credibility: http://collaborationslo.org/09resources/articles/Why%20Create%20Multi-Tenant%20Nonprofit%20Centers.pdf

Louis, I think the idea of sharing resources and office space for non-profit organizations providing services to the residents of DC is a great concept. It makes business sense to save precious resources, it helps create collaboration among nonprofits who might serve a similar client population and it sure makes it easier for an individual who needs the services of multiple agencies, if they are all in one location. BRAVO!
