How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  1. Providing FREE monthly networking opportunities in DC at noon on Sundays, build on meetup.com/onecity/

Support the volunteer grassroots initiative to provide FREE opportunities for people from all the wards to come together each month to share, collaborate and followup to take joint action on their ideas to build ONE CITY. Once people have connected in person at the free networking community event, they have been able to followup. This has been effective in bridging cultural, digital and other divides.

  2. Persuade the White House to pay attention to the capital city

Persuade the White House to pay attention to the capital city. Since only an amendment to the Constitution will change the basic situation of Washington, DC (less than usual local municipal autonomy vis-à-vis Congress, despite trappings of home rule), and such amendments take endless time, it falls on the President and his staff to pay much more attention to the needs of the capital city, including especially the so-called remnants of the middle class here. For example, a totally new approach is needed for preparing DC youths for jobs. Also the street repair situation seems woeful – here all neighborhoods…

  4. Improve parking so that residents will spend their dollars in the city.

Better signage at meters, longer parking (more than two hours), reduced rates for residents in shopping areas and more parking spaces. Shopping in MD and VA is a very enjoyable experience because parking is inexpensive/free and plentiful.

  8. Stop making our city the highest taxed in US. Coupler D-40 tax Deductions & Exemptions with the Federal IRS104 figures.

Every year the US govt. raises the D & E figures for inflation. DC last raised this figure in 2008. From 1991 to 2005 there was no increase in DC
Exemptions and Deductions ($2,000 and $1,370) putting us way behind.
    * DC Exemption 2011, single and married $4,000, Deduction $1,650 each.
    * Federal Exemption 2011, married $11,600, single $$5,800, Ded. $3,700.
    * Unincorp. Franchise Tax, required for all with business gross of $12,000.
Unchanged since 1986. Inflation adjusted should be $25,000.
    * Basic Business License is a disaster. Many people are renting a room or
    two illegally not knowing the…

  9. Introduce a Congestion Charge (ala London) to Reduce Traffic and Fund Public Transportation and Roads

To reduce traffic and congestion in DC, introduce a daily congestion charge (similar to what London did) for all vehicles entering downtown DC (area to be defined). The charge would be captured electronically (think EZPass) and the proceeds used to fund public transportation initiatives (including roads) and cover the costs of administration. Vehicles that violate the zone will be ticketed, with repeat offenders subject to impoundment. Residents living with the defined area would be exempt from any fees.

Taxis (regardless of origin - MD, VA, DC) would be exempt from charges and could pickup/drop off without limitation.

    This systems has…

  10. Rehire, retrain impacted dc residents fired from dcps so out of state newcomers can get jobs to fluff resumes and not raise test scores.

Rehire DC residents fired from dcps, get them off welfare and back to work. give them the same 5 week summer training that out of state folks get. Those folks have not raised test scores. Impact is a joke! It is used to provide jobs for 'non residents'. We want our community whole again with our residents working in our schools with our values with our children!

  12. Protect the City's Renters

Creating parameters that protect renters from hidden charges. Creating a partnerhship with developers that allow moderate (not low income) income people to have an affordable unit to rent. Unless you are poor or make $100,000 property managers say you can not afford to live in their apartments but most of us do not qualify for rent subsidy.Market rate apartment are out of moderate income people's reach.

  13. There has got to be a better solution for the New York Ave and Florida Ave and North Capitol Street corridor.

Since the re directing of the traffic, it has gotten much worse to get through this area.
I think the O Street need to be open and florida ave should be reopen to both directions.

  15. From 3-6 pm weekdays reassign school guards or communi police to local libaries

I notice a lot of unruly teenagers (and middle school students) coming into Tenley and Georgetown the libraries when school lets out. I have heard that the local library is still the "babysitter" of choice of parents who don't monitor their children after school. It is not fair for the librarians to have to control them and perform their normal duties. Redirect a community police officer to libraries and other hangouts for the few hours after school lets out. The police officers should record student ids of students who cause problems and report the information back to the school principals…

  16. Donna Alston ran for the Mayor in the District of Columbia. She is strong. Clergy have conspired against her while secretly intruding on her

Donna Alston ran for the Mayor against Gray. Clergy and her enemies have conspired with the authorties to hurt her in the community. She needs a job to fight for being bullied in her home. She knows the Lord. Fight that Donna Alston fight for the city. She will stand for equality for all.

  19. NO STATEHOOD FOR DC

The District of Columbia should not be afforded statehood until something is done to rid the city of all these unethical occurrences in the government. The Council should not get a pass by passing legislation it NEVER read. You can't blame Gandhi for passing the 2009 legislation legalizing online gambling. The City Council SHOULD HAVE READ THE BILL IN 2009. If there were anything in the bill that was NOT clear, the staffers should have made the proper inquiries. The City Council should institute government clearances for all positions that remotely is responsible for City funds. The thefts could be…
