How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  1. Enhance DC.GOV to search for all available services to residents of the District of Columbia from the public, private and non-profit sectors

Many of the ideas listed thus far already exist in DC, but many folks are unaware. An enhancement to DC.GOV which would include a fully integrated and seachable database of services available to residents would increase resident's knowledge of the resources as well as increase the ulitization.

  2. Major Economic Development in Ward 7's East Capital/Nannie Helen Burroughs area.

I am ready to see diversification in Ward 7! Major Economic Development in Ward 7's East Capital/Nannie Helen Burroughs area. The old Strand theater should be revitalized and used for entertainment purposes such as the Atlas, Lincoln Theater, etc. We have lots of greenery such as the Marvin Gay Park and I would like to see more POSITIVE use with this park. Park side dinning & entertainment would be great!!! Maybe summer concerts like Ft. DuPont park. There are lots of abandon property that can be transformed for housing, restaurants & entertainment purposes. These are things that will help with…

  5. Ensure the city provides equitable resources and support to citizens. This means improved public transportation in Washington Highlands area

The number of metro stations is far less in the Washington Highlands area than in other areas of the city. In addtion, buses run infrequently during non-rush hours during the week and less frequent than in other parts of the city on the weekend.

There is also a need for significant economic development projects in the Washington Highlands section of the city. One is hard pressed to find a place to meet for coffee and there are few to no restaurants in this section of the section.

Because this section of the city is near Prince George's County, the city…

  6. Create a publicly owned DC Partnership Bank for DC government accounts and to invest capital in our economy

A publicly owned, publicly accountable bank in D.C. would, in partnership with local financial institutions, delivers quality, sound financial services to promote jobs, sustainable local businesses and affordable housing in Washington, DC; enhances the financial health of the city’s general fund; and establishes the District of Columbia's sovereignty over its fiscal and monetary policies.

It is modeled after the Bank of North Dakota, with a 92-year history of safe, secure and highly profitable banking. North Dakota has the lowest unemployment rate in the country; and in 2009, when other states were floundering, it had the largest budget surplus it had…

  7. Rehire, retrain impacted dc residents fired from dcps so out of state newcomers can get jobs to fluff resumes and not raise test scores.

Rehire DC residents fired from dcps, get them off welfare and back to work. give them the same 5 week summer training that out of state folks get. Those folks have not raised test scores. Impact is a joke! It is used to provide jobs for 'non residents'. We want our community whole again with our residents working in our schools with our values with our children!

  10. Consensus-building as a pre-requisite to representation for DC

Because Washington DC is the Nation's Capital the diversity brought up by international institutions and worldwide agendas remain a consistent ground to exemplify the concept of a Global Village... Therefore educating residents over their roles and promoting civic engagement over local leadership and stewardships remain the only paths to a sense of comm-Unity, leading naturally to representation as we learn and gain consensus building over time through proper organizing starting from now... On.

  12. Invest and grow of an innovation economy in DC. Focus on iBed job creation and competitiveness for the 21st cent. DC Innovates, Inc

DC needs to establish a 21st century economic development framework that will foster an innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem with the goals of expanding new job and business opportunities for the residents of the District of Columbia. The District has been the proverbial 'hole-in-the-donut' as compared to its suburban MD and Northern VA counterparts. So, even though the District is:

 home to several leading universities and is the geographical center of the Greater Washington DC Metropolitan Region
 located in proximity to perhaps the largest federal R&D centers including the NIH, Navy Medical, Fort Detrick/USAMRIID and others
     located in…

  14. Combine & Reduce ALL District wide meetings

There are too many. Hire me to match like meetings and reduce spending and government waste as well as citizens time to simply attend ineffective meetings and to leave with no results. Have meetings streaming online so those that cannot attend can watch online and post reminders online. Basically look at what NYC is doing they are very organized and effective.

  17. City subsidized programs to develop workers' skills

As a garment manufacturer looking to create new production to contribute to not only the US economy but the District's it would be nice to have the city develop programs that taught residents without higher education or highschool diploma the skill of garment making to give production factories a reason to set up shop in the city and create jobs quickly that are paying livable wages. Garment production includes everything from fashion, to uniforms, to undergarments. Something to think about

  19. Make One City possible by creating real opportunities for people of all income levels to live and work in DC

Use the City Budget process to:
    • restore funding to preserve or build decent housing that people can afford
    • increase support for adult literacy, job training and child care
    • provide sufficient shelters and stable housing for homeless families and youth
    • help low-income families and residents with disabilities to meet their basic needs
    • restore funding for crime victims’ and domestic violence services
    • maintain health insurance for DC residents
    • protect food assistance for seniors.

pursue options to increase revenue if needed to preserve or restore funding to critical services
