How can we make the District of Columbia truly “One City?”

Making genuine progress toward creating “One City” is the Mayor’s highest priority. Mayor Gray has said that One City “is the recognition that all District residents, no matter their differences, are bound together by a common destiny and a shared desire to make the city even better for the people who live here. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood, we all want a vibrant, sustainable city, where all residents have an opportunity to provide for themselves and their families, where every neighborhood is safe, where every student goes to a good school, where every tax dollar is spent wisely on a government that works, and where citizens’ voices really count.” Yet the District government cannot achieve this goal alone.

We’d like your thinking on some of the specific questions that we’ll be wresting with at the summit:

  • How do we grow and diversify the economy?
  • What do DC government, businesses, and non-profits need to do to help people who aren’t currently job-ready get the skills they need to find work, especially in growing sectors of the economy?
  • In order to have healthy, thriving infants and toddlers, what District government services and resources will be most important for our families and communities?

  1. Create more transitional living for disconnected youth

The DC Alliance of Youth Advocates found that the District's rising homeless youth population are coming from failed systems of care with no stable place to live. We must invest in youth throughout their entire development- not stopping at 12, 16, 18, or 20. Let's prove their value in our community by designating affordable housing for homeless and at-risk youth.

  2. Only Doctors and Pharmacists Should Grow Medical Marijuana

Only Doctors and Pharmacists Should Grow Medical Marijuana. If this is truly a "Medical" issue then ONLY Licensed Medical Professionals (Doctors and Pharmacists) should be allowed to grow "Medical Marijuana". You don't want Poison or Pesticides getting into the Marijuana and you don't want greedy drug lords pushing pot on kids. A Licensed Doctor or Pharmacist can be sued for bad Pot, but these greedy pot growers only care about money. They aren't here to help with Medical issues. Let's be honest. You wouldn't let anyone grow Moldy Bread and sell it as "Medical Penicillin" on the Street. You also…

  3. Allow "Tasers" for Self Defense, so We won't have to buy Guns to defend ourselves

Allow "Tasers" to be sold in DC (All 50 States allow), so we won't have to buy Guns to Defend ourselves from Crime and to feel safe. Why is DC registering Guns, but not allowing Non-Lethal Self Defense like Tasers? I and many DC residents have to buy a Gun to protect ourselves if you don't change the law.

  4. Designate a day each year for "Guitars Not Guns" day music festival.

Designate a day each year for "Guitars Not Guns Day" music festival. GnG is a non profit children's music charity providing guitars and lessons to foster care and at-risk youth in the city. The students have an anthem song they play and sing called "Set Me Free". If we create a day to celebrate their achievements, encourage other youth to join, have food and concert can bond all race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ward or neighborhood through music. www.gngnca.org

  5. Providing FREE monthly networking opportunities in DC at noon on Sundays, build on meetup.com/onecity/

Support the volunteer grassroots initiative to provide FREE opportunities for people from all the wards to come together each month to share, collaborate and followup to take joint action on their ideas to build ONE CITY. Once people have connected in person at the free networking community event, they have been able to followup. This has been effective in bridging cultural, digital and other divides.

  6. Give "No Soliciting" on the door the deterrent power of "Do Not Call" city-wide

My aging mom lost $12,000 to a "landscaper" who came to her door and convinced her that she needed to fix a few concrete cracks on her front walk. Aging residents citywide are at risk. Pass a law that imposes a severe financial penalty for opportunists who violate a posted "No Soliciting" sign, just as the "Do Not Call" registry protects citizens from unwanted telephone solicitations.

  7. Introduce a Congestion Charge (ala London) to Reduce Traffic and Fund Public Transportation and Roads

To reduce traffic and congestion in DC, introduce a daily congestion charge (similar to what London did) for all vehicles entering downtown DC (area to be defined). The charge would be captured electronically (think EZPass) and the proceeds used to fund public transportation initiatives (including roads) and cover the costs of administration. Vehicles that violate the zone will be ticketed, with repeat offenders subject to impoundment. Residents living with the defined area would be exempt from any fees.

Taxis (regardless of origin - MD, VA, DC) would be exempt from charges and could pickup/drop off without limitation.

    This systems has…

  14. Rewrite your script to include the other half of the city - 52% of the nation's W-O-M-E-N!

You are committed to education for children, construction jobs for men. What about women? You can educate kids all you want and hire all the men you want and DC will still lag behind because the status of women in any country determines the quality of life and welfare for all.

  16. Physical Installation Visualizing all the Social Data created in DC in real time

It want to see a "monument" if you will that is devoted to displaying all the social data created within DC in real time. This physical visualization could also have a web version but ultimately DC's artists and technologist would come together to create this fantastic display that could be moved to different parts of DC depending on the time of year and what events are taking place in that neighborhood.

  17. Return to the policies that mayor Fenty use in regards to senior citizen properties.

For one thing instead of seniors having to come to government offices, personnel, would come to senior facilities.

  19. Help middle income dc residents get affordable housing

If you were born and raised in the district all your life. Why can't that be a benefit for affordable housing? You know history of the city and have supported it for generations. Just because you are considered middle income doesn't mean you can afford a house in the district if you are a single parent.
